As professional painters, we often get asked about accent walls. How do you know which wall to paint as an accent wall? How do you know what color works best for the accent wall? Stunning accent walls can be seen throughout magazines, and they’re often chosen because they are an inexpensive way to spruce up a home. When you go to paint an accent wall, you need to think about the entire space. Otherwise, you may not execute the project the right way and it just creates an off-putting feeling for the space.
Just Painting Some Accent Walls…
When you have a home with plain white walls from the ceiling to the floor, you need a pop of color. You may think that painting a few accent walls is the solution; however, it is not. If you were to go that route, it would look unfinished because you would simply be painting a few of your walls a different color than the rest. In some cases, it may look like you just ran out of money and couldn’t afford to paint the entire house.
Those homes in magazines that you see, they are painted to blend together – not just the walls, but the décor as well. Some pops of color here and there is not going to get you what you desire. Think about shopping for clothes for just a moment. You can’t simply pick up a hat or a scarf, throw it on with “normal clothes” and make it all work. No, you need to be able to put together the outfit piece by piece so that each piece matches. The same rings true with your home.
If you choose to paint a few accent walls, you are failing to do anything with the rest of the walls that probably need some attention. They likely have some wear and tear on them, unless you are living in a brand new home.
Choosing the Right Wall to Paint as an Accent Wall.
When it comes to choosing the perfect wall to accent, there are a couple of things that you should take into consideration. The wall should be symmetrical or it has some type of architectural detail that you are looking to highlight, such as special moldings, a fireplace detail or an art niche.
You are essentially trying to catch the attention of others with your accent wall and you don’t want people questioning why they’re looking at it. If the wall you are considering is ordinary or odd-shaped, it is not a good idea to accent it.
Selecting the Right Color for the Accent Wall.
When choosing a color for an accent wall, the one thing that you want to do is look for colors that are currently present in the room. For example, get inspiration from bedding, pillows, rugs, pictures, drapes, etc. Sometimes, you can even use a color that is in another part of the home, as this can help to bring cohesion and unity to the overall space.
One thing that you want to avoid doing is to create an accent wall that is simply a few shades different than the main wall color. You will hardly notice the difference. With accent walls, you want to go big and bold or do nothing at all.
