You don’t have to sand all the way to the bare wood, as you are simply trying to get the surface to matte finish rather than a glossy finish.

Mistake #2: The Surface Isn’t Dust- and Debris-Free Prior to Painting.

Before you begin priming or painting, you need to make sure that you have thoroughly cleaned the entire kitchen cabinet surface. You don’t want any dust or debris left behind. If there is, then when you begin to paint your cabinets, you won’t have a pristine, smooth finish; instead, you will have a rough, gritty finish -- almost as if you painted over sand. In order to remedy it, you will have to sand it down and repaint it.

Mistake #3: You Fail to Prime the Cabinets.

If you skip it, your cabinets will look fine at first, then a few months down the road (possibly even weeks), you will notice that there will be some areas that will start to bleed through the paint.
